You can either use the modem as the "host" where it negotiates the upper layers itself and you get an internal IP at the Ethernet interface or put it in bridge mode and then setup the router to do the PPP authentication and as a DHCP client. That's a personal question. However, Jeremy is telling me to make the setup. That is, combining today's expected speeds and features with the device count needed for a lab would far exceed the cost of setting up an older-tech lab that still has all the features needed separate from your working network where you can use modern tech in limited quantity, or ignore features you don't need.
